The Australia Council Marketing Summit 2018 presented a wider variety of content and a new title to match: Australia Council Marketing, Communications and Ticketing SummitKnowing me, knowing you! was the theme of that year’s Summit – quite simply the aim was to explore what we know and what we don’t, how we can know more and what our audiences need to know about us!

We teamed up with Mission Tickets who are curating some amazing ticketing professionals and an engaging product exhibition. We listened to your feedback from last year’s survey and we covered as many areas as we can of your nominated topics:

A nationally lauded company Director and marketing and communications professional, Evan Alexander is one of Australia’s most experienced marketers in the multicultural, not-for-profit and arts sectors, specialising in brand management, PR, media relations, social media, digital strategy, audience development and event marketing.

Helping people and organisations to identify breakthrough opportunities for innovation and experiment with their ideas is a focus of Judy’s at Inventium. One of her major motivations is being able to demystify innovation for people, creating an army of innovators in her wake. Her business degree focused on entrepreneurship, during which she studied international business at Ecole Supérieure de commerce in France and represented Australia at the annual collegiate entrepreneurship organisation conference in Chicago, USA.

Before joining Inventium, Judy was a senior innovation consultant at Deloitte where she worked with employees at all levels to generate creative solutions to client challenges and rapidly prototype and scale their innovations. She has managed program initiatives aimed at improving the ways in which people work, as well as improving business processes, technologies, products and services. Judy excels at making complex concepts simple. She is experienced in facilitation, having run workshops for clients across Australia, USA, Europe and Asia. In her time outside of Inventium, Judy immerses herself in the Australian start-up environment. Known (unashamedly) for her dad jokes, her warped sense of humour will make its way into most conversations. Judy is also proficient in the baking of brownies, but don’t let her chocolate addiction fool you, she’s a Tough Mudder finalist to boot!

Andrew Batt-Rawden – Panel, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! How to create a media release and measure an effective media/publicity campaign

Andrew bought Limelight Magazine from the ABC and Haymarket Media in 2013, and sold it earlier this year, remaining involved as the Publisher/Manager. Andrew also works (and has worked) for various arts organisations in various capacities including consulting, management, board, and marketing. His background includes diverse experience as an arts worker and artist – since his studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, his composition career has led to exploring data-responsive music – algorithmic composition combining movement, sound, software and hardware – and is expressed through his tech start-up Vordenker, which he co-founded in 2017 with Benjamin Hinchley to explore data-responsive art/content for mobile and live experience. Through Vordenker, he creates, produces, teaches and promotes. His background also includes small event and festival curation/ direction/ production/ marketing including for the Aurora Festival, Vivid at Seymour New Wave:Sound, Bellingen Music Festival as well as with Chronology Arts, which he co-founded in 2006 with composer Alex Pozniak.

Elly Baxter – Panel, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! How to create a media release and measure an effective media/publicity campaign

Elly is the founder and principal of Elly Baxter PR (EBPR), a consultancy that specialises in promoting arts and cultural projects. Prior to founding EBPR Elly worked for over a decade in marketing and communications for a range of arts organisations including Belvoir and Northern Rivers Performing Arts. She has a particular interest in stakeholder management including government, donor and community relations. Elly is also a co-creator of Mother’s Ruin: A Cabaret about Gin which toured extensively in Australia and the UK.

Elissa is a career arts journalist and editor.

Elissa began as a cadet reporter at The Age, writing features for Rolling Stone in her spare time. After a brief stint as a classifier at the Office of Film and Literature Classification, Elissa joined Rolling Stone as deputy editor and later, as editor, she took the iconic music magazine to its highest circulation in its 30-year history.

Elissa then embarked on a freelance career, become one of the Sydney Morning Herald’s leading freelance arts writers. In late 2017 she co-created a new Sydney-based arts website, Audrey Journal, which now absorbs all of her time. And then some.

Lucy is a change-maker, an ideas machine and an exceptional communicator. After leading a successful ad agency for 20 years she focused on using her skill set to change the world. She was the founding CEO and director of a new international women’s health charity, building the team and the strategy to raise $7M in less than three years for a network of hospitals and a midwifery school in Ethiopia. Lucy then went on to transform a Cambodian children’s charity as its first CEO before hitting the speaker’s trail full time, writing her second book and consulting. She’s the creator of the world’s first childbirth education program written specifically for men which is run in pubs all over Australia and she’s working on her next industry disruption. Lucy is an accomplished photographer, a social media gun and a mother of three.

Sérgio is Head of Strategy at global media communications agency Initiative, Australia. Sérgio is also a regular columnist at Marketing Magazine, scholar of the prestigious The Marketing Academy and Chairman of its Alumni program. Sérgio is also a sought-after speaker regularly featured on local and international circuits. Sérgio began his career as an IP lawyer before finally pivoting towards brand strategy, media and innovation, internationally. Emma Carey – Masterclass, How to navigate a world drowning in data; leveraging Outside Insight to drive ROI pre-, during and post- campaigns

As Senior Key Account Manager at Meltwater, Emma is responsible for managing Meltwater’s highest value clients across Australia and New Zealand as well as a running her own team of Key Account Managers.

Emma is passionate about the relationships that she builds with her clients and is driven by the outcomes she helps those clients achieve through their strategic use of the Meltwater services.

Deborah Cheetham – Panel, The collaboration for Milnjiya, Milky Way – River of Stars

Deborah Cheetham, Yorta Yorta woman, soprano, composer and educator has been a leader and pioneer in the Australian arts landscape for 25+ years. In the 2014 Queen’s Birthday Honours List, Deborah was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO), for “distinguished service to the performing arts as an opera singer, composer and artistic director, to the development of Indigenous artists, and to innovation in performance”.

In 2009 Deborah established Short Black Opera as a national not-for-profit opera company devoted to the development of Indigenous singers. The following year she produced the premiere of her first opera, Pecan Summer. This landmark work was Australia’s first Indigenous opera and has been a vehicle for the development of a new generation of Indigenous opera singers. Pecan Summer has now been performed in Mooroopna, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide and in 2016 became the first Indigenous opera to be presented at the Sydney Opera House.

In March 2015 she was inducted onto the Honour Roll of Women in Victoria and in April 2018 received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of South Australia for her pioneering work and achievements in music.

In October 2018 Deborah will premiere her latest work, Eumeralla, a War Requiem for Peace in the ancient language of the Gunditjmara at the Port Fairy Spring Festival.

Aaron has 20 years management experience in the arts and culture sectors, having held leadership roles at Sydney Opera House, Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Arts Centre Melbourne, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and others. Aaron consults with many of Australia’s cultural organisations to drive their marketing objectives and deliver increased revenue and audience growth. Aaron is an Associate of Baker Richards, a leading international consulting and software firm which helps cultural organisations realise their commercial potential.

Angela is the founder and managing director of Antix Management, a Sydney based consultancy providing ticketing and sales management to live events in Australia, New Zealand and international markets. Prior to starting Antix Management in 2007, Angela held a number of senior sales and ticketing management roles within ticketing companies and in house on a number of productions. Antix clients include Disney Theatrical Productions, CML, Michael Cassel Group, Louise Withers and Associates, The Really Useful Group and TEG Dainty.

Antix Management provides advice to clients on sales strategy, pricing, budgets and forecasts with a focus on revenue and inventory management. Over the past 10 years, Antix have overseen the strategy on a number of record breaking productions in the Australian market including The Lion King, Mary Poppins, Matilda The Musical, Billy Elliot, Mamma Mia, Les Misérables and Mrs Brown’s Boys Australian and New Zealand Tours. Current productions include Aladdin, MAMMA MIA!, Beautiful and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Tomeris the Founder and CEO of GRONADE, an enterprise optimisation company in Sydney. As an experimental entrepreneur and advisor for over a decade, Tomer has worked with companies across continents, blending the worlds of data, AI, behaviours and creativity to optimise the relationships between humans and products. He is a TED Alumnus, IBM Global Entrepreneur and Westpac Businesses of Tomorrow recipient.

Julia is an experienced digital + communications strategist and marketer with more than a decades experience in marketing roles across publishing, arts organisations and agency side as a social and content strategist. In her current role as Communications Manager at Contemporary Arts Precincts in Melbourne, Julia works across marketing, digital, systems and development functions. Julia also works as an independent communications consultant to arts start-ups and social enterprises, with a particular interest in building partnerships between innovative organisations and established commercial interests.

As the Strategy Director of Asia Pacific at Meltwater, David is responsible for operational alignment, culture and strategic growth across the region.

Splitting time between ASIA and Australia David is passionate about driving Meltwater’s growth in the enterprise and government space by introducing clients to Meltwater’s Outside Insight vision and helping to navigate a new digital reality.

Clare Collins and Alice Collins – Insight Communications– Workshop, The Name Of The Game: Developing An Effective PR Campaign So The Winner Takes It All / Panel, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! How to create a media release and measure an effective media/publicity campaign

Clare Collins and Alice Collins, directors of Insight Communications, specialise in cause, culture, community and health public relations. Since 2010, they’ve been regular presenters at UTS on Ecology of Public Communication and were joint finalists for UTS Alumni of the Year in 2016. They’ve presented on strategic communication in the UK and Europe and at Australia’s 2017 Mumbrella360 Communication Summit.

Clare and Alice are the recipients of 12 PRIA awards (2010-16) and were Australia’s first PR professionals to win an AMEC International Communication Effectiveness Award and Global Alliance COMM PRIX Award in 2014. In 2017, Alice was named among the UTS Towering 10 Alumni and became the first PR professional to receive an AMEC Young Professional of the Year Award.

Over the last 10 years Martin has led, designed and created multiple innovative predictive analytic solutions that have generated over $100 million in returns across different clients. With the bcorp northraine, he designs algorithms, generates concepts and reviews data systems for fair and ethical machine learning driven decisions. Twenty per cent of the work is for human rights groups and this year northraine has a goal to teach 10k students machine learning.

Gary is a Larrakia man who trained at the National Aboriginal and Islander Dance School (NAISDA) and has toured nationally and internationally with some of Australia’s premier dance companies, the Aboriginal and Islander Dance Theatre, Bangarra, Dance North and Tracks Inc. Gary is a dynamic dancer, choreographer, teacher and performer and a much loved and revered figure in the NT dance community. He actively strives to maintain a strong cultural identity, acting as an ambassador for his culture through his practice. Gary’s choreographic work is sensual and evocative, presenting the best of contemporary dance rooted in the traditions of Indigenous Australia.

Tony has been working in commercial and non-profit arts marketing in NYC for the last nine years. Organisations across the country have worked with him to increase their revenue, grow attendance, and have a better understanding of their customers’ behaviour through data-driven research and analysis. Clients include Second Stage, Playwrights Horizons, Lyric Opera of Chicago, New York Philharmonic, Sundance Institute, and many others. Before joining JCA Arts Marketing, he worked on the producing team for hits Jersey Boys (Broadway, London, Australia, and on tour) and Matilda The Musical (Broadway), and for three seasons on and off-Broadway at Manhattan Theatre Club.

Benjamin writes books, TV screenplays, columns, essays and features. He’s the author of the memoir The Family Law (2010), the travel book Gaysia: Adventures in the Queer East (2012) – both nominated for Australian Book Industry Awards – and the Quarterly Essay on Safe Schools, Moral Panic 101 (2017). He’s the co-author of Shit Asian Mothers Say (2014) with his sister Michelle, and the sex/relationships advice book Law School (2017) with his mum Jenny. Benjamin has written for over 50 publications in Australia and beyond – including the Monthly, frankie, Good Weekend, the Guardian, the Australian, Monocle and the Australian Financial Review – and has a PhD in creative writing from QUT. The Family Law is now also an award-winning TV series for SBS, which Benjamin created and co-writes. Benjamin was also a researcher and associate producer on Blackfella Films’ Deep Water: The Real Story (SBS) and a writer on Endemol Shine’s Sisters (Ten). He is co-host of ABC RN’s Stop Everything, and a panellist on TV shows like ABC’s Screen Time, Q&A and The Drum. He lives in Sydney.

Local Peoples is a strategic design studio based in Melbourne, Australia. They design healthy, resilient and resourceful communities. They partner with forward thinking organisations to develop human-centred insight and strategy. They co-design high value and high impact brands, products, experiences and stories. Local Peoples believe at the heart of good design is consideration and empathy for the people they are designing for – which is why they employ Human-Centred Design at every opportunity. Jessica is recognised nationally and internationally as a cultural entrepreneur, advocate and fundraiser for the arts. She has extensive experience in the arts industry, having held senior arts leadership positions across the country, most recently as the Executive Director, West Australian Ballet. Jessica is an experienced high level manager with a great understanding of strategic direction setting, policy development, stakeholder liaison. Jessica has a long history of working with First Nations artists, promoting arts in remote and regional WA and building capacity in arts organisations throughout the country. She is a strong advocate for artistic collaborations that promote the development of the arts sector by fusing the capability of major performing arts groups with opportunities ‘on the ground’ with small to medium arts organisations.

Pierre-Michel studied philosophy and sociology at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris and earned his Ph.D. at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in 1980. He was researcher at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (Paris) from 1981 to 2013, before getting elected as Professor at the Collège de France where he holds the chair of Sociology of Creative Work. Since 1995, he has also been Professor at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales where he teaches sociology of labor and occupations, and sociology of art and culture. He is the author or co-author of 16 books, and numerous articles in such journals as Revue française de SociologieSociologie du travail, L’Année SociologiqueRevue EconomiqueRevue française d’économieAnnalesAnnual Review of SociologyPoeticsa.o. He is currently member of the editioral committee of the Revue française de Sociologie and member of the editorial board of the Revue EconomiqueGenesis, and Perspectives (a Journal of the National Institute of Art History). Recent books include The Economics of Creativity, (Harvard University Press), and La différence, la concurrence et la disproportion (Fayard) and Big data et traçabilité numériquedus. His next book (in preparation) focuses on Talent. Economics and Sociology.

With more than 20 years’ experience in the Ticketing Industry in Australia and UK, Jo has gathered a wealth of knowledge of Ticketing, CRM, Subscriptions, Fundraising, E-Marketing and CMS as they apply to venues, festivals, agencies and theatre companies. Jo has worked with Sydney Theatre Company, Edinburgh International Festival & Hub Tickets, Firstcall Australia & UK, Ticketmaster, Ensemble Theatre, Sydney Film Festival, SOCOG – Sydney 2000 Olympic Arts Festival, Australian Opera and The Adelaide Fringe during her varied career. In addition, Jo has worked with key software providers including Priava, Enta Australasia & AudienceView where she was responsible for Client Liaison, Business Development, System Planning and Change Management. Jo Is currently Ticketing Manager for Brisbane Festival.

For the past two years Kate Murray has been working on the international branding campaign for Australia –through the public diplomacy program Australia Unlimited. Kate has a ​experience working in campaigns for arts, government and higher education organisations having represented major brands and projects including the Australia Council for the Arts, Australia’s representation at the Venice Biennale, the new Australian Pavilion in Venice.

Andrea loves China. Since her first encounter in 2002, she has pursued every opportunity to gain a deeper insight into this fascinating country.

Driven by her passion, frustration of the transactional nature of the Australia-China relationship and impatience for positive change, Andrea co-founded the China Australia Millennial Project, an award-winning multi-million dollar startup which connects leading talent, innovation and capital in both nations. Possessing a working proficiency in Mandarin, she has two bilingual Masters degrees, a BSc in Neuroscience and is a fellow of the School for Social Entrepreneurs.

She has been named one of Australia’s 100 Most Influential Women by Westpac and the Australian Financial Review. Formerly CEO of the Australia China Business Council, she also co-founded Sydney Roller Derby League.

Stephen Page is the Artistic Director of Bangarra Dance Theatre. In his 27 years with the company he has developed a signature body of works that have become milestones in Australian performing arts. His most recent production for Bangarra, Dark Emu, premiered at Sydney Opera House on 14 June and will tour nationally throughout 2018. Stephen continues to reinvent Indigenous storytelling within Bangarra and through collaborations with other performing arts companies, notably directing the Indigenous sections for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and creating a new dance work for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony. In 2017, Stephen was honoured with the Australia Council Dance Award for significant contributions to the cultural and artistic fabric of the nation, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO).

Veronica is the Executive Director of Arts Access Victoria, the State’s leading arts and disability organisation. In this role, she has led an ambitious agenda of social and artistic transformation for people with a disability and the communities in which they live. With a passion for social justice and equity, she has spearheaded campaigns relating to the inclusion of people with a disability in arts and culture, as audiences and cultural innovators. Veronica has a successful history of employment at senior levels in the not for profit sector, with a major focus on policy and advocacy. She has a long track record of leading research programs aimed at addressing barriers to participation.

Gil is a creative technologist, speaker, and filmmaker who earned the reputation for engaging the public with popular culture utilising Maker culture and is excited by harnessing technology to enable others to create, make and express their narrative. He has worked for the City of Melbourne as the Creative Technologies Activator where he programmed and developed the Makerspace, an interactive environment where people can engage with technology and create through technology. Nicknamed “The Kosher Tony Stark” by those who he has helped, Gil brings a flair to everything he does and doesn’t shy away from the big projects.

Zan is a radio broadcaster, music journalist, and culture junkie. For more than twenty years, Zan has been sharing her opinions and passions with a captive audience. Most well known as the host of triple j Mornings for more than a decade, Zan is also a regular across the ABC TV and online. In 2018 Zan launched a new Mornings show on Double J, as well as taking on a new role as ABC National Music Correspondent. When not behind the radio mic or on screen, Zan hosts the Bang On podcast alongside Myf Warhurst. In between this and everything else, Zan lives online with an active Twitter (@zanrowe) and Instagram (@zanrowe), every day.

Aurélien trained at the Royal Ballet School of Flanders and was subsequently accepted into the Royal Ballet of Flanders. His repertoire includes all of the major classical ballets, as well as extensive experience in contemporary styles. Aurélien has participated in a number of international galas and festivals and was a member of the Berlin based Gregor Seyffert & Company. Since retiring from dancing in 2008, Aurélien has become one of the most sought after Ballet Masters on the market. Since then he has worked as a guest ballet master for Ballet Preljocaj, Scapino Ballet, National Ballet of Portugal, Dutch National Ballet, Ballet d’Europe, Béjart Ballet Lausanne, Bordeaux Opera Ballet, Lyon Opera Ballet, Finnish National Ballet, Royal Swedish Ballet, Hong Kong Ballet, National Ballet of Estonia and Ballet du Rhin. He has also taught master classes in Brussels, Paris, Rotterdam,   Cannes and Tokyo.

Kate Scott is the Director of Marketing & Audience Development at Bangarra Dance Theatre, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation and one of Australia’s leading performing arts companies. Content has been Kate’s obsession throughout her career, from her early days as a music journalist and editor, to the decade she spent in marketing at The Australian Ballet. At Bangarra, she’s been lucky enough to work on a range of innovative digital storytelling projects, from the VR capture of the company’s landmark production Bennelong, the company’s annual Vivid Sydney projection, and a new digital archives platform.

Andrew has been in the ‘ticketing’ business for more than 20 years, in which time he has worked for agents, venues and system suppliers. He started his career in professional football, spent time in rugby union, before working with a host of suppliers such as Ticketmaster, PatronBase and

For the last four years he has worked as a consultant and works with companies to tackle issues around technology, data and staff efficiency in arts and sports organisations.

He is the Director of Europe’s Ticketing Professionals Conference and is currently serves on the board of the International Ticketing Association (INTIX).
