National Innovation Games

Join The National Innovation Games

BACKGROUND

Building a sustainable arts and culture sector during these challenging times requires us to embrace technology. The National Innovation Games is an opportunity to share, learn, experiment, collaborate and define new ways to create more sustainable communities for everyone.  It’s an open intellectual property (IP) Innovation Challenge in the spirit of collaboration – together we can help each other.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY

The Australia Council National Innovation Games will bring together artists, organisations and cultural practitioners to participate in a dynamic two-day event alongside other creative thinkers and innovators. You are invited to register to join one of twenty innovation teams to collaborate and explore new ways that you might use technology to support your organisation, practice and or community.

Each team will be supported by a dedicated facilitator and include a diversity of thinkers from across the country; graduates, arts and creative practitioners, PhD candidates and other industry experts.

The Challenge topic that teams will explore together is How might you creatively embed technology to deliver more sustainable organisations, practices and communities?

The Games are held online using a combination of Zoom, Slack and Miro. There will be a variety of ways to participate – through breakout sessions, design sprints, performances, support labs and mentoring booths. The Paddl team will be on hand to support any tech and participation needs throughout.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

In return we hope you will:

  1. Take away practical solutions you can implement. Share in the IP of any ideas any team develops over the duration of the Challenge.
  2. Build new and or deeper networks with diverse thinkers committed to a thriving arts, culture and creative sector.
  3. Take away media content and ideas of the entire experience for your own practice, business, marketing, social posts and records.
  4. Gain exposure to effective virtual platforms, facilitation of virtual teams and events, and design sprint and hackathon methodologies.

It’s a rewarding day of collaboration that will deliver results.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Please feel free to share the opportunity with your networks and colleagues. There is no registration fee, and the opportunity is open to artists, organisations, independent practitioners and collectives from across the arts and creative sector.

*The National Innovation Games is designed to bring together a diverse range of participants from across the country and we work to ensure a balance between geographic locations, career level and artforms. This will be considered in the registration process, as spaces may be limited.

DIVERSITY AND ACCESS

We encourage registrations from people who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people with disability and people living in regional and remote areas.

We want to ensure inclusive learning for all and are committed to providing safe and accessible challenge days for everyone. We will work with individual participants to support specific needs. If you have access requirements, a young baby or family, cultural practices or any other specific needs, please let us know how we can best support your participation.

Chelle Destefano

Building a sustainable arts and culture sector during these challenging times requires us to embrace technology. The Australia Council has partnered with Paddl to deliver the inaugural Australia Council National Innovation Games, held online in August 2020.

Deaf Multidisciplinary Visual artist Chelle Destefano collaborated as part of the winning team, to develop a concept for enhanced closed captions aimed at making the delivery of digital arts and screen more inclusive to the d/Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing community.

She spoke to the Australia Council about her experience with the National Innovation Games.

‘I learned how valuable the National Innovation Games is to our community and that it paves the way for changes for the better.’
