About This Episode

Join Lena Nahlous, Executive Director of Diversity Arts Australia and Rani Pramesti, Co-Facilitator of the Creatives of Colour project as they share fresh approaches and case studies.

We know that research has an important role to play in helping us argue our case and advocate, but how can we centralise artists and creativity in the approaches that we take? How can research be embedded into creative processes, and how can artists be embedded into research processes? And how can research be presented in accessible and engaging ways for diverse audiences?

Rani Pramesti

Rani Pramesti is a proud Peranakan-Tionghoa-Javanese person with roots in Indonesia, Kulin Country (Melbourne) and Ohlone Country (San Francisco). Like many in the arts, Rani wears many hats: as an intercultural producer, an independent storyteller and public speaker, as well as an advocate for cultural equity. Since graduating from the Victorian College of Arts in 2013, Rani has dedicated herself to collaborations with underrepresented groups in the arts, working inter-sectionally with people of colour, First Nations communities and people who live with disability. In 2019, after a series of challenging experiences navigating the predominantly white Australian arts sector, Rani led a research process interviewing creative people of colour. Rani’s research focused on pinpointing the problems shared by creatives of colour in trying to forge their careers in a white arts world. The findings informed what would become Creatives of Colour: an online platform and shared space by creative people of colour, for creative people of colour.
