Eugenia Lim

Eugenia Lim is an Australian artist of Chinese–Singaporean descent who works across video, performance and installation to explore how national identities cut, divide and bond our globalised world. Interested in how nationalism and stereotypes are formed, Lim invents personas to explore the tensions of an individual within society – the alienation and belonging in a globalised world.

Lim has exhibited, screened or performed at the Tate Modern, LOOP Barcelona, FIVA (Buenos Aires), Buxton Contemporary, Samstag Museum, Recontemporary (Turin), GOMA, Kassel Dokfest, Museum of Contemporary Art (Sydney), Dark MOFO, ACCA, Melbourne Festival, Next Wave, ACMI, FACT Liverpool and EXiS (Seoul) and MPavilion.

Lim has been artist-in-residence at the Experimental Television Centre (NY) and in exchange at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). In 2016-17, Lim undertook residencies at Bundanon Trust and at the studio of Shen Shaomin as a 4A Beijing Studio resident; and the Robin Boyd Foundation. In 2018-20, Lim is a studio artist with Gertrude Contemporary, and in 2020, is working towards the premiere of a major new site-responsive performance work, Easy Riders (with APHIDS).

Collaboration, artistic community and the intersection between art and society informs her practice: in addition to her solo work, she co-directed the inaugural Channels Festival, was the founding editor of Assemble Papers and co-founded Tape Projects. Lim is the co-writer and host of Video Becomes Us, an artist-made ABC iView series on video art. She is a tutor and lecturer at the Victorian College of the Arts and RMIT University, and is the co-director (with Mish Grigor and Lara Thoms) of APHIDS, a 25-year-old experimental artistic company based in Melbourne.
