Biographies
Dr Sally Gray is a writer, curator, artist, cultural historian, fashion scholar, creative producer and broker. Under the umbrella of her independent arts consultancy business founded in May 1994, Sally’s art, design, craft, fashion and urban planning projects have been realised in both the public and private sectors, nationally and internationally.
This activity followed a career in Melbourne, London and Sydney in which she was a progressive educator; curriculum innovator; social change agent; advocate for gender, racial and sexual equality; researcher; writer of public policy; ministerial policy advisor; manager; creative director and curator.
As a curator, Sally’s most recent large-scale project was the popularly acclaimed exhibition David McDiarmid: When This You See Remember Me at NGV Melbourne (May-August 2014). Her exhibitions – covering architecture, art, design, photography, fashion, queer cultures and cultural history – have appeared in Beijing, London, Melbourne, Sydney and regional galleries and museums.
Her publications appear in refereed journals and books and popular arts publications – in print and online. She has been awarded prestigious Research Fellowships from the Australian Research Council (2010-12) and the Churchill Trust (1993) and was a Visiting Research Fellow at The Centre for Fashion at the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (2015-2016) and a Visiting Scholar in Cultural History at UNSW Art & Design (2013-2015). She has taught Art and Design History at UNSW and UTS, Sydney, and given numerous public talks and conference papers on art, design, architecture, fashion and urban planning. Sally brings intellectual rigour, creative insight, management ability and a collaborative spirit to all of her professional engagements.
