Thursday’s Fictions, one of eight projects from the LAMP: Story of the Future Residential Lab held in May, has debuted on Second Life.

Thursday’s Fictions in Second Life was one of eight cross media projects to participate in the LAMP: Story of the Future Residential Lab in Tasmania in May this year.

Thursday’s Fictions, which developed from page to stage to screen, combines a historical sweep of media – from traditional forms of poetry, dance and music to cinema to the evolving  digital immersive world.  In a unique tie-in on Sunday July 29, the most recent incarnation of Thursday’s Fictions was launched in Second Life following the broadcast of the film on ABC TV.

Directly following the broadcast viewers were invited to meet the collaborative team behind the project for a Q&A session hosted on ABC’s Second Life Island. Chaired by new media educator Christy Dena, the panel included Thursday’s Fictions creators and Australian dance filmmakers Dr Richard James Allen and Dr Karen Pearlman of The Physical TV Company, Thursday’s Fictions in Second Life Producer and Designer and LAMP Director Gary Hayes and Story Consultant and LAMP mentor Jacqueline Turnure.

The Q&A session was attended in world by around 45 visitors from Australia and the US and was viewed by many more on the live broadcast on the Second Life Cable Network. An archive of the session can be viewed at https://www.slcn.tv/thursdays-fictions-second-life.

Visitors to the immersive Thursday’s Fictions in Second Life space, which is hosted on the AFTRS Island have already included a group of 10 students from a school in the US visiting this morning after the broadcast.

The collaborative team behind the project will also be taking part in a special Story of the Future event at ACMI Cinemas on 30 August 2007 as part of the Melbourne Writers’ Festival. The event, Writing / Reading / Playing / Living the Story of the Future, will include discussion on writing for virtual worlds interactive exploration of the future for writing and reading in a world where Literature continues to evolve.

A partnership between the Australia Council’s Story of the Future project and the Laboratory of Advanced Media Production (LAMP) at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, the lab worked with eight teams of writers, designers and producers to develop cross media projects, which were then pitched to an audience of industry VIPs.

To enter the world of Thursday’s Fictions in Second Life:
1) If you have not used Second Life before, go to https://secondlife.com/ and click on ‘Join Now’ – it takes 5 minutes.  (Note: Requires a fast computer with broadband).
2) Once you have downloaded the Second Life software, then log on.
3) After you have finished orientation click on Search, choose Places tab. To go directly to Thursday’s Fictions in Second Life: type and select Thursdays Fictions. Teleport.
