ADELAIDE TO HOST 2008 INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF THEATRE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

The Association International du Theatre pour L’Enfance et la Jeunesse – the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People (ASSITEJ).

Approximately 1500 people are expected to attend the 16th ASSITEJ World Congress and Performing Arts Festival, which Adelaide will host in May 2008. This major event will promote Australia as an important centre of creation for young audiences. It will create new international opportunities for Australia’s theatre for young people companies and provide opportunities to debate matters of arts and education.

Held every four years, the combined Congress and Festival is ASSITEJ’s most important artistic and networking event and the most significant cultural event for families and young audiences in the world.  It will bring many directors, producers and programmers in the international youth performing arts sector to Adelaide.

The program, which will focus on the Asia-Pacific rim, will showcase Australian works – including contemporary and traditional Indigenous performing arts – to the world.

The theme of ‘Old Knowledge, New Word’ will offer perspectives on our contemporary relationship to history, ancient myth or ideas, while venturing towards new horizons, through a diverse program including theatre, dance, circus, multimedia and puppetry.

There will be up to 15 Australian works and 15 international works, with collaborations between artists and companies from different countries. It is proposed to commission a major Indigenous work as the centrepiece of the Festival and to incorporate a special literature program.
