The Australia Council for the Arts congratulates Roger McDonald, who took out this year’s Miles Franklin Literary Award for The Ballad of Desmond Kale.
Mr McDonald won the $42,000 Award, Australia’s most prestigious writing prize, for his historical novel focusing on the lives of wool pioneers. It was the fifth time one of his books has been nominated for the Award.
Australia Council Director of Literature Josie Emery said that the Miles Franklin was richly deserved.
‘There are few more poetic novelists than Roger who are writing today. It is testament to the strength of his writing that his novel won from a field of such outstanding Australian writing,’ she said.
‘The Australia Council is proud to have supported Roger’s writing over the past twenty years, as we are in having supported the other four writers who were nominated for this year’s prize over the course of their careers.’
Australia Council funding directly supported three of the five novels nominated for this year’s Miles Franklin Literary Award.
