AUSTRALIA COUNCIL MOURNS DR RODNEY SEABORN

The Australia Council for the Arts today expressed its sadness at the passing of arts patron Dr Rodney Seaborn, AO, OBE.

Following his retirement from a successful career in psychiatry, Dr Seaborn started a new pathway as an arts philanthropist, beginning with the purchase of the Stables Theatre in Sydney, which faced closure at the time.

This led to the establishment of Seaborn, Broughton & Walford (SBW) Foundation, a charity trust funded by Dr Seaborn and a team of arts givers to benefit the performing arts in Australia.

A long list of theatres and organisations have benefited from the SBW Foundation over the past 20 years, including The Griffin Theatre Company, Belvoir Street, the Ensemble, the Bell Shakespeare Company, the Sydney Festival, the Australian National Playwrights’ Centre, the Blue Mountains Festival, Performing Lines and NIDA.

In 2001, Dr Seaborn was made a director and life governor of NIDA and more recently in 2006, he received a lifetime achievement award at the Sydney Theatre Awards.

The Australia Council joins with the rest of the arts community in mourning his loss.
