AUSTRALIA COUNCIL MOURNS JOHN STRINGER

John Stringer, internationally known Australian curator and for the last forty years one of Australian art’s greatest proponents, has died aged 70.

For the last fifteen years John Stringer has been the curator of the Kerry Stokes Collection in Perth and has also curated for many Australian and international galleries. Most recently, he curated Cross Currents, Focus on Australian Contemporary Art for the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney. During his long career, Mr Stringer served on various boards, including the visual arts board of the Australia Council, Artbank and the Murdoch University Art Collection, Perth.

Mr Stringer was co-curator of the celebrated exhibition the field in 1968 and in the 1970s was employed by the visual arts board to mount exhibitions, to act as advisor to the board, and to assist in arranging exhibitions of Australian art overseas.

The Australia Council mourns the passing of John Stringer and sends its condolences to his family, friends and the many colleagues who worked with him during his illustrious career.
