AUSTRALIA COUNCIL MOURNS STEPHEN BIRCH

The Sydney artist Stephen Birch died on Sunday 2nd September 2007 after a long battle with cancer. He was 46.

Stephen was born in Melbourne in 1961. He studied art at Prahran College and graduated in 1983 with a Bachelor of Art and Design and in 2000 was awarded an MFA from the College of Fine Arts (COFA), University of NSW. He exhibited his work in numerous group shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and Wellington and had his first solo exhibition at Reconnaissance Gallery, Melbourne, in 1988.

Stephen was successful in receiving five grants from the Australia Council: the first in 1988 for a residency at the Paretaio Studio in Italy; a New Work grant in 1997; the Greene Street Studio in 2000; a New Work grant in 2003 and another New Work grant in 2006 to create a new body of installation and video work for an exhibition held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney from March to May this year. The exhibition, Looking Out My Back Door was his first solo museum show and featured large-scale installations from the last decade of his art practice. His installation The Trip 2005 was also acquired for the MCA Collection earlier this year.

The Australia Council joins with the rest of the arts community in mourning Stephen’s loss.
