AUSTRALIA COUNCIL MOURNS THE PASSING OF FRANCO BELGIORNO-NETTIS

The Australia Council for the Arts mourns the sudden passing of a great contributor to the arts in Australia – Franco Belgiorno-Nettis.

In 1959, Franco Belgiorno-Nettis’s company instituted the Transfield Art Prize — the largest art prize in Australia. In 1973 he helped establish the Biennale of Sydney, of which he remained Founding Governor until his death.

Franco Belgiorno-Nettis was also instrumental in securing land for the Australian Pavilion, designed by Philip Cox, at the Venice Biennale.

A Life Governor of the Art Gallery of NSW and trustee of the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation, Franco Belgiorno-Nettis was the recipient of many awards including the Companion of the Order of Australia (AC).

The Councillors and staff of the Australia Council extend their sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Belgiorno-Nettis family.
