The Australia Council for the Arts is deeply saddened by the passing of Betty Churcher AO.
Australia Council Chair Rupert Myer AM said Mrs Churcher made a significant contribution to the Australia Council in the 1980s, as Chair of the Visual Arts Board and Deputy Chair of the Board, and to the nation throughout her life.
“With Betty Churcher’s death, Australia has lost one its great advocates and enthusiasts for Australian art and Australian artists,” Mr Myer said.
“With her own family of artists, Betty was an inspiration to many others and served as mentor and confidant.
“She was able to communicate so effectively with artists from many backgrounds, audiences, curators, writers, benefactors, arts professionals and Arts Ministers.
“At the National Gallery of Australia, she introduced audiences of all ages to life-changing exhibitions and experiences.
“She will be greatly missed.”
“The Australia Council extends its sympathies to her family.”
