AUSTRALIA COUNCIL TO SUPPORT SYMBIOTICA TO CYBERARTS07

The Australia Council has awarded over $34,000 to the OK Centre for Contemporary Art for SymbioticA to exhibit in the celebrated new media festival, CyberArts07 at Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria this September.

SymbioticA is an art and science collaborative research laboratory situated at The University of Western Australia (UWA) in its School of Anatomy and Human Biology. The laboratory is dedicated to exploration – from an artistic perspective – of scientific knowledge in general, and biological technologies in particular.

SymbioticA, along with Australian artists Leon Cmielewski and Josephine Starrs, recently received accolades at the 2007 Prix Ars Electronica International Competition for CyberArts. SymbioticA received the Golden Nica award in the hybrid art category of the prestigious competition.

During the festival, SymbitoicA’s projects will go on display in the OK Centre for Contemporary Art. The artists exhibiting include, Paul Vanouse, Boo Chapple, Donna Franklin, Nigel Helyer and Oran Catts & Ionat Zurr.

This year’s CyberArts festival titled Goodbye Privacy will delve into what the public and private spheres have come to mean and the interrelationship that now exists between them.

The event runs from September 5-11.
