The Australia Council for the Arts has welcomed the appointment of Senator George Brandis SC as the new Minister for the Arts and Sport.Australia Council chairman Mr James Strong AO warmly welcomed the appointment.
‘We look forward to working with Senator Brandis to strengthen the Australian arts sector and build community engagement with our world-class artists and arts organisations,’ he said.
‘Senator Brandis is well-known as a strong advocate both through his legal career and his time in parliament. He has a strong personal interest in both literature and the performing arts.
‘We believe that Australian artists and Australians who love the arts will be well served by this appointment,’ Mr Strong said.
Mr Strong also hailed the contribution of Senator the Hon Rod Kemp, the outgoing Minister for the Arts and Sports.
‘Senator Kemp has been an unswerving champion of the arts, and has left an ongoing legacy through increased support for major performing arts companies and the visual arts sector.’
