AUSTRALIA PERFORMS AT 3RD ASIAN ARTS MART

Two of Australia’s leading performing arts companies will take centre stage as part of a major contemporary Australian performing arts promotion at the 3rd Asian Arts Mart in Singapore from 3-5 June 2005.

Victorian-based Lucy Guerin Inc will present Melt, an intensely focused duet with two female dancers in a projected environment of temperature extremes. deckchair theatre Company from Western Australia will perform Thirteen Hundred Ashtrays, based on the life of Yang Li, who plays himself.  The play explores how strangers may bestow extraordinary acts of kindness that can lead you from exile to freedom.

Lucy Guerin has an international reputation for a unique movement sensibility, which is both elegant and profound, highly detailed and with a strong conceptual integrity. Lucy Guerin has toured her work throughout the USA, Europe and Australia and has been commissioned by such renowned companies as Mikhail Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project (USA), Richochet (UK) Woo Co (Denmark) and Chunky Move (Australia).  She has received many awards for her work including the Prix d’auteur from the Rencontres Choregraphiques Internationales de Bagnolet (France), a ‘Bessie’ Award (New York Dance and Performance Award) and the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award.

deckchair theatre is known for the commissioning and production of new works which reflect the cultural diversity and rich social history of the Australian people. deckchair theatre has toured in Australia and internationally and has received the Edinburgh International First Award for Best New Production, as well as nominations in the Helpman Awards for Best New Work in 2001 and 2002. Thirteen Hundred Ashtrays won the 2004 WA Equity Award for Best Direction.

The Australia Council will coordinate the promotion of Australian contemporary performing arts at the biennial Asian Arts Mart.

In addition to the Australian performances, the promotion will focus on the 7th Australian Performing Arts Market in 2006, and other leading Australian performing artists and companies.
