BOOK PROMOTION SPREADS THE WORD ON READING

Australia’s largest promotion of books and reading, Books Alive 2007, will encourage more Australians to discover the joys of reading over the coming month.

The Minister for the Arts and Sport Senator the Hon George Brandis SC will launch the fifth annual Books Alive campaign at the Australian Book Industry Awards in Sydney this evening.

‘Books Alive aims to introduce – or reintroduce – all Australians to the simple joy of opening a brand new book. We look forward to more Australians reading during the coming month,’ Senator Brandis said.

Books Alive 2007 ambassador, the popular author and commentator Peter FitzSimons, will also attend the event before embarking on a national promotional tour.

More than 260,000 copies of his commissioned title The Ballad of Les Darcy, a biography of the legendary Australian boxer, will be given away free with any of the 50 titles in the 2007 Books Alive Great Read Guide during the campaign.

The Great Read Guide is the cornerstone of the campaign, profiling 50 ‘thumping great reads’ in fiction, crime, thriller, fantasy, history, popular science, travel, biography, children and teen categories. Australian titles dominate the list almost four to one.

More than 2.5 million copies of the Great Read Guide will be handed out during the month-long campaign, in the August edition of The Australian Women’s Weekly and at participating booksellers, department stores and public libraries.

A national television advertising campaign, bookseller initiatives, a website and an e-newsletter round off Books Alive 2007.

Books Alive chair Sandra Yates AO said that Books Alive 2007 continued the campaign’s success over the past four years. ‘Since 2003, Books Alive has placed more than one million books into readers’ hands.’

Books Alive is an Australian Government initiative that aims to encourage all Australians to discover the joys of reading. It is developed through the Australia Council for the Arts and supported by the local book industry.
