The Australia Council for the Arts congratulates the three Australian novelists who have made the longlist for the 2006 Man Booker Prize – Peter Carey, Kate Grenville and MJ Hyland.
Two of the 20 novels longlisted for the Booker Prize – Kate Grenville’s The Secret River and MJ Hyland’s Carry Me Down – were written with direct support from the Australia Council’s Literature Board.
Kate Grenville’s The Secret River has been one of the recent standouts of Australian publishing. The historical novel about the early settlement of the Hawkesbury River took out the 2006 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and the Christina Stead Award (Fellowship of Australian Writers).
MJ Hyland’s second novel Carry Me Down was also produced with support from the Literature Board. The novel is an intense journey through a year in the life of a twelve-year-old boy.
The third Australian nominee for the 2006 Man Booker Prize is Peter Carey’s Theft.
