FUNDING FOR MUSIC THEATRE ANNOUNCED

The Australia Council for the Arts today announced that nine exciting productions will receive almost $289,000 as part of a new initiative to support Australian musical theatre.

The three-year music theatre initiative, worth around $350,000 per year, is a joint collaboration of the Music and Theatre Boards, to support distinctive Australian voices in music theatre.

Some of the new productions receiving funding include a new production by the Black Arm Band, a new collaboration between Meryl Tankard and Elena Kats-Chernin in western Sydney, an online music theatre event, and new Australian chamber operas Falling Like a Bird and DeLudo.

Australia Council director of music Paul Mason said that the results demonstrated the quality and diversity of Australian music theatre.

‘Nine exciting contemporary music theatre projects will receive funding through this initiative in 2009,’ he said.

“The works supported will add to the dynamic mix of new Australian work that is available to audiences”

‘This initiative recognises both the quality and potential of Australian music theatre. We look forward to supporting the further development  of unique local voices in music theatre over the coming three years.
