The visual arts board, in consultation with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts board, will work with Melbourne University Publishing (MUP) over the next three years to publish 10 Indigenous contemporary art books.
The concept behind the initiative is that there are few mid-priced, well-researched and illustrated books on contemporary Indigenous art available, yet Australian Indigenous contemporary art continues to grow in terms of international reputation and its contribution to Australian society.
The series will allow various authors to discuss individual artists as well as themes, and include Indigenous visual arts as well as new media art and craft. A wide readership is envisaged, including secondary and tertiary students, cultural tourists, art collectors and the general public.
