INDIGENOUS GROUP FROM REMOTE ARNHEM LAND MAKES HISTORY AT WOMEX

Award-winning music group, Yilila has made history by becoming the first Australian Indigenous group to perform at the renowned World Music Expo, WOMEX in Copenhagen.
Representing the best of contemporary Indigenous musical talent, Yilila will perform to a capacity crowd at WOMEX – the leading international world music market which is attended annually by 2800 producers, publishers and programmers.  The four day expo is a thriving hot house of musical talent showcasing over 300 artists from 40 countries.

Yililaís raw blend of high energy reggae and world music with traditional Red Flag dancing has attracted significant national and international attention through performances at the Festival of World Cultures in Ireland, Festival Mundial, The Netherlands and WOMADelaide in South Australia.

The invitation to WOMEX followed Yilila’s hugely successful showcase at the inaugural 2008 Australasian World Music Expo in Melbourne. The group’s appearances at WOMEX and AWME have been supported by the Australia Council.

“It’s such a thrill to see a high calibre musical group like Yilila up on the world stage at a high-profile forum like WOMEX. I have great confidence that they will wow the audiences in Copenhagen – weíre incredibly proud to support them,” said Sandra Bender, Executive Director for Arts Development, Australia Council for the Arts.

Straight from Copenhagen, Yilila will be performing at the second AWME in Melbourne, 19-22 November.
