NATIONAL INDIGENOUS ART TRIENNIAL

Culture Warriors – Australia’s first Indigenous Art Triennial

This weekend sees the opening of Australia’s first National Indigenous Art Triennial (NIAT) at the National Gallery of Australia.

Coinciding with the National Gallery’s 25th anniversary and supported by the Australia Council the National Indigenous Art Triennial ( NIAT) is an exciting contemporary art event, celebrating the vitality and diversity of Indigenous art in Australia.

Presenting the work of 30 artists the NIAT is the largest survey show of Indigenous art at the National Gallery in more than 15years. Featuring up to four recently created works from each artist, the 30 artists include Australia Council fellows, Julie Dowling, Ricky Maynard and Philip Gudthaykudthay.

With installation, new media, photo media, painting on bark and canvas, sculpture, textiles and weaving, the diversity of contemporary Indigenous art practice is represented.

Presenting artists from every state and territory the diversity of Indigenous cultures is presented.

The chosen theme for the Triennial is Culture Warriors and the  guest curator for the first Triennial is Brenda L Croft, senior curator, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art, National Gallery of Australia.

The Australia Council is proud to support the Triennial. It is a welcome opportunity for showcasing the vitality of contemporary Indigenous art, and keeping culture strong.

The NIAT will sit alongside existing annual, biennial and triennial contemporary visual arts events in Australia, including the  Biennale of Sydney, Brisbane’s Asia-Pacific Triennial, the Melbourne Art Fair, the Adelaide Biennial, and Darwin’s National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award.

The NIAT will be on display at the National Gallery of Australia from 13 October to 10 February 2008.
