RUN_WAY SUCCESS

Ten young and emerging new media and interdisciplinary artists have been funded through Run_Way.

The Young and Emerging Artists’ Initiative is administered by the New Media Arts Board to provide opportunities for artists and artsworkers to travel, learn and develop new skills of interdisciplinary or new media arts practice.

The successful applicants of Run-Way this year are: Airstrip, Bianca Barling, Frost, Sarah Last, Phillipa Murray, Janet Osbourne, Vanessa Sowerwine, Emma Stewart, Ingrid Voorendt and Emile Zile.

A further thirteen artists and organisations from across Australia were funded by the New Media Arts Board (NMAB) in the categories of New Work (Research & Development) and New Work (General).

Victoria’s Boo Chaple has also received the NMAB’s national residency at SymbioticA, an independent research laboratory dedicated to the exploration of scientific knowledge in general from an artistic perspective. This six-month residency is situated in the School of Anatomy & Human Biology at the University of Western Australia in Perth. Chapple’s residency will be used to explore the electrical properties of collagen and DNA.

A full list of successful applications in this round is available from the Resources section of this website or use the search term ‘nma assessment’. If you are thinking of applying for a grant, the 2005 Support for the arts handbook (search term ‘handbook’) explains the selection criteria and the funding categories of the artform boards of the Australia Council, including the New Media Arts Board.

The next NMAB closing date is 1 May 2005 for the categories of New Work (R & D and General), Skills and Arts Development (Individuals, Groups and Organisations), Key Organisations – Program Grants and Fellowships.

All of the NMAB’s existing residencies and special categories, such as Run-Way, will be offered in the Arts Catalyst reorganisation. Check the Australia Council website in the coming months for updates on how to make applications.
