Throughout October and November 2006, more than 400 kindergarten to grade three students in the Hunter region collaborated with emerging photographer Carla Feltham to create large-scale photographic art works that depict their home and community.
Each artwork will feature hundreds of photographs, like Riley’s pictured, that will ultimately form large-scale banners, which will be gifted to the participating schools.
The project was developed to coincide with Maitland Regional Art Gallery’s current exhibition of Michel Brouet photographs that depict the everyday life, community and characters of Maitland. Participating schools received a workshop with Carla in their school, a free disposable camera for each student, a free visit to the art gallery (thanks to ArtsNSW’s ConnectEd program) to view the Brouet exhibition and participate in a number of multi-sensory activities, and the collaborative art works.
For education coordinator Clare Irvine this project marks the first of a series of collaborative art works between children and professional artists facilitated by the art gallery.
