SHHHH… ARTIST TRADE SECRETS

Exhibitionists: artists’ trade secrets is a new publication from the Australia Council for the Arts. It reveals the secrets of talented young artists and artsworkers who are making their mark on the Australian cultural landscape.

All artists profiled in the publication have received funding from the Australia Council’s Young and Emerging grants and programs.

One of the profiled artist groups is duo Sista She, who work in a hybrid mix of hip-hop, comedy and theatre.

‘We conceived Sista She in our bedrooms and lounge-rooms, we started performing in squats without PA systems and then moved on to cabaret and music venues,’ the duo said.
‘It was a massive dream of ours to play the Sydney Opera House Studio and we did it – with a breakaway hit!’

Exhibitionists is also an interactive website. This gives young people the chance to read other artist profiles, upload their own work and tell their own stories.

This publication also includes handy information on the Australia Council’s Young and Emerging artist initiatives, which will inspire young people to investigate options of support for their creative pursuits.

‘Every year people contact the Australia Council with great ideas, energy and drive, but aren?t sure how to develop their concepts into something tangible, or in many cases even where to begin,’ said Karilyn Brown, executive director of the community partnerships and market development division at the Australia Council.

‘The Exhibitionists publication will give young people the chance to see how others have grown good creative ideas into successful projects,’ she said.
