The Australia Council for the Arts mourns the loss of James Murdoch, who passed away in Bali on October 25.
Murdoch had a long and distinguished career in the arts across a number of roles including as an administrator, manager and writer on music.
In particular in 1973, he became Music Consultant to the first Music Board of the Australia Council, which was at the time chaired by Don Banks. His achievements in this role included the formation of the Australian Music Centre, to document and promote Australian music. He went on to become the AMC’s founding director and in this role made a significant and longlasting contribution to the development of many Australian composers
‘The scope of James Murdochs contribution to Australian musical life is astounding” said Paul Mason, Director, Music of the Australia Council.
Murdoch was particularly instrumental in maintaining the Peggy Glanville Hicks Composers Trust and House, which continues as a vital opportunity for Australian composers.
The Australia Council extends its heartfelt sympathies to James Murdoch’s family.
