David Milroy, Trina Parker and Anthony Steel have each received $80,000 fellowships in the latest theatre board funding round.

Each year, the theatre board invites applications to its Fellowships grant category to provide individual artists with financial support to undertake a two-year program of creative work and/or professional development that extends their practice and develops their career.

With his fellowship, playwright, director and musician David Milroy will investigate new approaches to the development of Aboriginal theatre by studying in the Pilbara, as well as researching performance and the rock art of the Palyku people.

Trina Parker has worked as a theatre designer, director, teacher and mentor for thirty years. During her fellowship, Ms Parker will broaden her skills in digital and audio visual technologies, will design set and costumes for two new works and document thirty years of her design work.

Anthony Steel has been the artistic director of many major festivals in Australia over the last thirty years. During this fellowship, Mr Steel will write a book that charts the development of festivals in Australia and document the influence that festivals have had on artists and audiences.

In this funding round, the theatre board also announced successful applicants in the categories of New Work, Skills Development and Artform Development.

Chair of the theatre board Mr Ian McRae said, ‘The quality of New Work applications in particular continues to be outstanding, confirming what both the Board and theatre artists already know — that there is an abundance of creative energy at work in all genres of theatre. It remains a disappointment for us that we are able to support so few’.
A full list of successful applications in this round is available from the Resources section of this website or use the search term ‘theatre assessment’. For more information on the theatre board, go to ‘Theatre” by using the drop-down menu at the top of each page of this website.

If you are thinking of applying for a grant, the 2005 Support for the arts handbook (search term ‘handbook’) explains the selection criteria and the funding categories of the artform boards of the Australia Council, including the theatre board.

Furthermore, the theatre board will conduct client meetings in Canberra on 20 April and Melbourne in mid-May. These meetings are an opportunity to discuss your project face-to-face with a staff member. For more information and to make an appointment, call 02 9215 9105 or 1800 226 912 to speak to staff from this board.
