The Australia Council for the Arts wishes to acknowledge the passing of Dame Margaret Scott AC DBE, and recognise her significant contribution to ballet, dance education and cultural life in Australia.
Dame Margaret was the founding director of The Australian Ballet School and guided its development for almost three decades. Australia Council Arts Practice Director for Dance Adrian Burnett acknowledged her work in championing Australian choreographers through the school, many of whom went on to become some of the nation’s leading artists.
“I was lucky enough to be a student at The Australian Ballet School during her tenure and her warmth, generosity and vision for dance in Australia left a lasting impression – her extraordinary legacy is a rare and treasured gift,” he said.
The Australia Council extends its deepest sympathies to her family, friends and colleagues. Read more about Dame Margaret’s extraordinary career.
