With the death of Elizabeth Jolley Australia has lost a unique voice.
Born in England in 1923, brought up in a German-speaking household and educated by Quakers, her role as a quizzical outsider was established early. She migrated to Western Australia in 1959 with her husband and three children.
Elizabeth Jolley has won The Age Book of the Year Award three times (for Mr Scobie’s Riddle, My Father’s Moon, and The Georges’ Wife) as well as the Miles Franklin Award for The Well.
The Australia Council for the Arts joins all of Australia’s literary community in paying tribute to her talent.
