VALE MIRIAM HYDE

The Australia Council mourns the passing of composer, teacher and performer Miriam Hyde AO, OBE.

Ms Hyde’s indelible mark on Australia’s musical landscape is evident. Her works are well-known to music students and teachers and often performed at competitions and eisteddfods across the country.

A recipient of an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1981 and the Order of Australia (AO) in 1991, Ms Hyde’s contribution to music was honoured in July 2004 by receiving the APRA-Australian Music Centre Distinguished Service to Australian Music Award, as part of the 2004 Classical Music Awards.

Manager of the Music Board of the Australia Council Ms Peta Williams said, ‘Miriam Hyde was not only one of our finest composers and teachers, but she was also an inspirational role model for Australian women composers specifically, and women in music generally. Her award last year for Distinguished Service to Australian Music was a well-deserved tribute to a remarkable person’.

Vale Miriam Hyde.
