WESTERN AUSTRALIAN THEATRE INITIATIVE TO EXPLORE NEW TERRITORY

A new program will support the very best independent theatre in Western Australia.

The Western Australian theatre development initiative (WATDI) is a new funding program that will offer new, flexible forms of support to encourage theatre artists to take creative risks and explore new territory.

The program is a partnership between the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Blue Room and Artrage – with support from the Australia Council for the Arts.

Artrage director Marcus Canning said that the initiative will be welcome boost for Western Australian theatre.

‘We hope that WADTI will change the face of theatre in this state by giving independent voices the support to get out there and create,’ he said.

‘We’re looking for the kind of ambitious ideas that can only be realised through a well-resourced funding program such as this.’

Australia Council director of theatre John Baylis said that the initiative could serve as a useulf model for similar programs in other states in the future.

Successful applicants will receive developmental budgets worth $30,000, $60,000 or $90,000.

Applications to WADTI will be advertised in December 2008 and close on Monday 16 March 2009.
