Kick start your career: Karin Page

The Early Career Artists and Producers (ECAP) team ask past ArtStart recipient Karin Page how receiving the grant effected her practice and what’s in store from here.

What are you doing now?

I have just finished up a huge year with my music and am currently putting together a music business plan for the next 12 months. I have been busy playing lots of shows/festivals and have been writing quite a lot. I am also doing some co-writing with Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe) and getting ready to head back into the recording studio.

How did ArtStart allow you to what you are doing today?

The financial support that ArtStart provided allowed me to move at a much faster pace with my music career. This meant I was able to get the ball rolling without waiting until I had enough of my own funds to move forward. It allowed me to heavily promote myself and my shows which in turn helped me to build my fan base. It meant I was able to focus on my writing, instead of spending time working a side job to pay for marketing/promotion/equipment.

What piece of advice would you give to yourself pre ArtStart application if you could?

Be prepared to work hard. The grant is a great kickstart to your career, but in order to take advantage and make the most of it, you need to be really organised and dedicated before, during and after your grant.

What’s the one piece of make or break advice would you give potential Artstart applicants?

Be mindful that 12 months sounds like a long time, but it actually goes really quickly, so make sure your business plan is realistic and that your goals are achievable for that timeframe. Revisit your business plan regularly and update your short term goals to stay on top of your plan.

On tour somewhere in the world promoting my new album. Should have couple under my belt by then…!
