The 2019 Cross Family Fellowship Recipients

The Cross Family Fellowship offers participants in the Venice Biennale 2019 Professional Development Program additional funding of up to $5,000 each to extend their career-focused activities overseas.

This could include additional international activity, such as residencies, meetings, collaborations and projects, as well as access costs associated with participation in the Professional Development Program for regional participants/participants in independent practice.

The fellowship is made possible through a generous donation from Venice Council members Paul and Samantha and Anthony and Clare Cross.

Vivian Cooper is Audience Engagement & Studio Programs Manager at Adelaide’s flagship contemporary art gallery, ACE Open. Vivian plans to use her grant to connect with institutions including the Van Abbe Museum and Stedelijk Museum in the Netherlands and Nottingham Contemporary in the UK, where she will research public programming and engagement strategies.

Vivian will take part in our Venice Biennale Emerging Arts Professionals Program from 25 Sep – 5 Oct 2019.

Lara Merrington is Curator at Shepparton Art Museum in Victoria. Lara will use her grant to take part in a series of workshops in workshops in exhibition design and to assist with the curation of an exhibition of Bauhaus design with Boisbouchet in France.

Lara is an Exhibition Team Leader in the Australian Pavilion for the Venice Biennale in 2019.

Jimmy Nuttall is a practising artist from Melbourne, whose work combines aspects of performance, dance and sculpture. Jimmy will use his grant to undertake an artist’s residency in Paris and to collaborate with international artists at the PerformandArtsForum in St Ermes, France.

Jimmy is a Volunteer Exhibition Attendant for the Venice Biennale in May 2019.

Dan Bourke is an artist and independent curator based in Perth, where he runs the small printing press Benchpress and the artist-run initiative, Adult Contemporary. Dan plans to use his grant to travel to Los Angeles to make connections with artist-run spaces, then to New York, where he will undertake an internship with arts publisher, Primary Information.

Dan will take part in our Venice Biennale Emerging Arts Professionals Program from 25 Sep – 5 Oct 2019.

Clare Armitage is an independent curator who, for the last seven years, has worked in private art galleries between Darwin and Katherine. Clare proposes to use her grant to cover the cost of travelling from Katherine to take part in the Emerging Arts Professionals Program.

Clare will will take part in our Venice Biennale Emerging Arts Professionals Program from 4-14 May 2019.

Blake Griffiths is an arts educator and public programs officer at the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery. Blake will use his grant to attend the Communicating the Arts Forum in Canada, where he will give a presentation about FRESHbark, a mentorship program initiated by Blake for emerging Indigenous Artists in the Broken Hill area.

Blake will take part in our Venice Biennale Emerging Arts Professionals Program from 25 Sep – 5 Oct 2019.

Anna Louise Richardson is an artist and independent curator based in Western Australia. Anna is also a mother of small children and will use her grant to pay for childcare costs, enabling her to take part in the Emerging Arts Professionals Program in Venice.

Anna will take part in our Venice Biennale Emerging Arts Professionals Program from 4-14 May 2019.

Amelia Winata is a Melbourne-based writer and curator, and a founding member of the arts criticism platform Memo Review. Amelia plans to use her grant to view and review an exhibition of German artist Charlotte Posenenske (1930-1945) at Dia: Beacon. Amelia will conduct an interview with the curator of the exhibition and her review will be published in the September issue of Art Monthly Australia.

Amelia will take part in our Venice Biennale Emerging Arts Professionals Program from 4-14 May 2019.
