Vale Gabrielle Carey

We wish to acknowledge the passing of celebrated author Gabrielle Carey.

Jan 01, 1970

We wish to acknowledge the passing of celebrated author Gabrielle Carey.

Carey was the author of ten non-fiction books. She described her first co-authored book, Puberty Blues, as a ‘slightly disguised autobiography’.

In the decades since the publication of Puberty Blues Gabrielle turned her writing talents to non-fiction and biography. Her last two books, Falling Out of Love with Ivan Southall (ASP, 2018) and Only Happiness Here – In Search of Elizabeth von Arnim (QUP, 2020), were literary biographies of once-celebrated Australian authors.

Her biography of poet and novelist Randolph Stow, Moving Among Strangers: Randolph Stow and my family, was short-listed for the National Biography Award and won the 2014 Prime Minister’s Literary Award for non-fiction.

In 2018 Gabrielle travelled to Ireland to research a series of personal essays about James Joyce, one of her lifelong passions. Gabrielle’s essay, Waking Up with James Joyce, was listed as a ‘Notable Essay of 2019’ in Best American Essays 2019.
