What is a fundraising event?
Fundraising events are planned gatherings or activities where the primary aim is to raise money for a cause. Events can be in-person, online, or hybrid. Examples include:
- galas
- trivia nights
- auctions
- raffles.
The benefits of fundraising events
Fundraising events can:
- give you another source of income
- introduce new people to your creative work
- raise your profile
- strengthen relationships with existing supporters
- let supporters introduce others to your work.
Events can also give people a memorable, social way to experience your work and understand why it matters.
How do fundraising events raise money?
How you raise money through a fundraising event depends on the type of event, your audience and fundraising goals. You could:
- sell tickets or tables to attend the event
- invite donations during the event
- sell raffle tickets
- auction goods, services or experiences.
You can use of one or several of these approaches for the same event.
What to consider before you run an event
Fundraising events take time and money to deliver. They carry a financial risk, and the income you raise needs to outweigh the costs of running the event.
Before deciding to hold an event, consider:
- how much you want to raise
- how much the event will cost, including venue, catering, artists fees, raffle prizes, auction items
- whether raffle prizes, auction items or other goods and services can be donated or provided in-kind
- the time and people needed to deliver it
- how many people are likely to attend.
You must consider the event’s likely net return – the income raised after costs – and whether that return justifies the time and resources needed to deliver it.
