About the program
Looking for a way to contribute your unique skills, knowledge and experiences to creating a diverse, flourishing arts and cultural sector? Curious about how boards and board members can support changemaking in arts and culture?
The Company Director Capability Fund for Individuals supports diverse artists and arts workers to prepare for a board role by developing foundational knowledge and skills in governance. This opportunity specifically supports artists and arts workers who are under-represented in board roles (see eligibility requirements). You can apply for a flat rate of $3,000 to support your participation in training offered by the following providers:
- Australian Institute of Company Directors
- Institute of Community Directors Australia
- Governance Institute of Australia
- Small Giants Academy
You can choose from a range of courses offered by the listed providers to meet your own specific professional development needs and learning preferences. Courses with the above providers cover a range of topics including the roles and duties of company directors, strategic planning, financial management and fundraising, effective communication and conflict resolution.
Why are we running this Fund?
Across 2022, 2023 and 2024 Creative Australia funded 170 arts workers to participate in courses run by the Australian Institute of Company Directors to support governance capability. In addition, we commissioned a series of panel discussions curated by Diversity Arts Australia exploring arts governance and launched the Governance Hub in September 2024 to provide free access to guides and templates for policy development.
The aim of this Fund is to build on this investment with a specific focus in supporting greater diversity in arts and cultural governance. The Fund supports individuals who have never been a company director to develop the skills, knowledge and mindsets that position them to take up a role on the board of an Australian arts and cultural organisation.
Research by Creative Australia with the Institute of Community Directors, along with independent research from Diversity Arts Australia has shown that effective governance is supported by board members with diverse perspectives and skill sets that are relevant to the organisation’s mission.
This Fund aligns with Creative Australia’s 2024-2028 strategy and priority to offer opportunities to increase diversity in the creative workforce and leadership.
Organisations have a key role to play in supporting greater representation and diversity in their governance. Creative Australia’s Governance Hub supports organisations to do this vital work with guides, templates and case studies.

Do I need an ABN to apply for a grant?
All individual or organisation grant applications based in Australia must have an active Australian Business Number (ABN). Individual applicants without an ABN may have their grant administered by an individual or organisation with an ABN. Organisations operating outside of Australia do not need an ABN to apply, depending on their circumstances, (please check with your accountant or tax advisor).
The name of the applicant must match the name of the ABN and the name of the bank account we pay the grant into. If you cannot provide an ABN and bank account that are in the same name as the applicant, you will need to nominate an administrator for your grant.
For more information about this, please contact leadershipprogram@creative.gov.au.
Will receiving a grant affect my Centrelink payment?
Grants can be considered income by Centrelink. The amount is generally assessed as a lump sum and could affect your Centrelink payment for the financial year. Artists who are running a business (even on a small scale) may have their grant treated differently. It is possible to have your grant paid to an administering body if you wish.
Applicants should contact Centrelink on 13 28 50 for advice. Additionally, Centrelink’s Financial Information Service (FIS) is an education and information service available to everyone in the community and may be of benefit to applicants who also receive assistance through the social security system. To contact FIS phone 13 23 00.
If I receive a grant, will my tax be affected?
Grants may be considered part of your income in a financial year and may be subject to tax. You must determine your own taxation liabilities. We suggest you consult your financial advisor or contact the Australian Taxation Office.
I work in screen; can I apply to this fund?
While we can support artists and arts workers involved in making screen-based art, we do not support organisations whose primary and main practice is associated with short film, feature film, television or documentary or electronic games.
